Why replace instead of patch

The homeowners first asked about caulking the cracks and replacing only the city sidewalk. After inspecting the slab we explained that it was too worn and uneven for patches to hold, and gave them an itemized estimate for a full replacement. They agreed.

The challenge

The driveway had large cracks, sunken sections and uneven edges that were a trip hazard. The sidewalk had to meet the City of Loveland's requirements for slope, grade and width, and the ground underneath was packed so hard that preparing a stable base took extra work.

How we did it

1. Removed the failing driveway and the sidewalk section and took the old concrete to a recycler in Windsor.
2. Excavated to depth, placed a recycled concrete base and compacted it three times.
3. Tied #3 rebar through the driveway and into the sidewalk.
4. Poured a 4,000 PSI mix, timing the pour and finish to the day's heat.
5. Replaced the sidewalk to City of Loveland standards, broom finished both surfaces and cut control joints.

The result
